Advice on face-to-face consultations

The latest guidance on face-to-face stop smoking consultations issued in November by the NCSCT on behalf of PHE was very clear that there is no national mandate to resume face-to-face consultations:

“Any decision by service providers to resume face-to-face provision should be considered alongside local coronavirus restrictions, as well as operational practicalities within the stop smoking service”

“Remote behavioral support remains a practical option for continuity of stop smoking provision, where services consider that this remains the best local option.”

The guidance remains current and is available here

Given the high rates of COVID transmission, national coronavirus restrictions and the availability of remote smoking cessation support, serious consideration should be given to pausing all local face-to-face stop smoking consultations at this time, in favor of delivering support remotely

Service Manager John Stephenson – JS letter

Please speak to your mentor or service lead first if you feel able to restart providing the stop smoking service.

·         In order to trigger the 12 week payment for clients who have been supported up till 12 weeks, please input CO reading value  as 0.5 on Quit manager at 12 week session.
·         Please note this only applies while CO monitoring has been suspended due to COVID. We will communicate with you as soon as the situation changes.

One way to restart your service provision can be done via phone consultations, if you do not have a second phone line you may use your LPC-issued mobile phone to do so – Please note it will be your responsibility to top the phone up once the call minuets have depleted.

     June 2021

The South Tees Stop Smoking Service continues to support smokers across South Tees to quit for good. Pharmacies that have a contract can continue to deliver support remotely. Please see the Quit Manager Home page for updates.

·         We would encourage pharmacies who do not have a contract with us to signpost smokers to the specialist service. We have small business cards which are available on request that detail how to access the service.

·         Champix (Varenicline) Supply Disruption Alert: We have issued a statement which can be found on pharm outcomes or Quit Manager Homepage.

·         We continue to offer our E-cig Pilot to smokers who wish to stop smoking with aid of an electronic cigarette. See the flyer for details of how to access this.

·         We successfully launched our smoke-free app for anyone living in South Tees to access premium features for free for 3 months. Please see the flyer for details

The Varenicline PGD can be delivered by pharmacists working across Middlesbrough, and Redcar & Cleveland, where the pharmacy has a contract with Public Health to deliver either standard stop smoking support or an Introductory Level dispensing only contract.

To support the ongoing implementation of the Varenicline PGD, we have devised the following online training for pharmacists.

Pharmacists are required to watch the training video and review the PGD document. If you have any queries please contact the Stop Smoking Service via email at Stopsmoking@middlesbrough.gov.uk.

Once the training has been completed, please complete the declaration form and the Stop Smoking Service will arrange PGD documentation and an appointment with a specialist stop-smoking nurse.
